September gives Kitsap runners several very different choices. You can walk or run a local trail 5K in Bremerton, enroll a child in a five-week series, cross the bridge for a road race in Gig Harbor, or join a multisport team for a day trip to Port Angeles.
The first decision may need to happen soon. Healthy Kids Running Series advertises a discount through Sunday, August 23. Race For A Soldier prices change after August 31. Big Hurt prices rise September 1, which is also the event’s deadline for a guaranteed shirt size.
September race deadlines at a glance
| Event | Date | Location | Format | Next deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Recovery 5K | September 12 | Bremerton | Trail 5K fun run, walk, and hike | Price increase after September 11 |
| Healthy Kids Running Series | September 13–October 11 | Bremerton | Five-week youth series | $5 discount advertised through August 23 |
| Race For A Soldier | September 13 | Nearby Gig Harbor | Half marathon, 10K, 5K, kids’ run, and virtual run | Half marathon, 10K, and 5K prices change after August 31 |
| Big Hurt | September 25–26 | Olympic Peninsula day trip | Four-leg multisport race for individuals and relay teams | Price and shirt-size cutoff September 1 |
The right choice depends less on pace and more on the kind of day you want. Here is what to know before registering.
Recovery 5K: a local trail event for runners, walkers, and hikers
Saturday, September 12 at 9 a.m.
Illahee Preserve Heritage Park, 5474 Almira Drive NE, Bremerton
Displayed price: $35 before processing charges
The Recovery 5K registration page describes this as a fun run, walk, and hike on the trails at Illahee Preserve. That makes it the most clearly trail-based choice in this group and the only featured event held on Saturday, September 12.
This may suit you if you want one local event without a bridge crossing or overnight planning. It also gives walkers and hikers clear permission to participate. Because the route uses preserve trails, do not assume it will feel like a paved road 5K. The organizer does not publish enough detail on the main page to confirm the exact surface mix, elevation, accessibility, parking plan, packet pickup, or aid stations.
The displayed fee was $35 on August 20. The page says the price increases after 11:59 p.m. on September 11. Registration appeared available when checked. Confirm the final total in the live checkout flow.
Healthy Kids: five Sundays rather than one race
Sundays at 2 p.m., September 13 through October 11
Pendergast Regional Park, 1199 Union Avenue W, Bremerton
Displayed full-series total: $48.70, including the listed fee
Healthy Kids Running Series is the option to compare first if you are registering a child. It is a five-week program for children from pre-K through eighth grade, not a standard community 5K. The dates are September 13, September 20, September 27, October 4, and October 11.
Distances vary by age and include short dashes, quarter-mile and half-mile events, and a one-mile run. The Kitsap program also lists a Challenger Division, an adaptive 75-yard event for children with disabilities or special needs. Its description allows a child to use a supportive device and have support people on the course.
The Healthy Kids registration page advertises a $5 discount for registration by August 23. On August 20, the displayed full-series checkout amount was $48.70, including a $3.70 fee. Registration covers all five weeks.
Families can also choose a single-day walk-up entry. The displayed total is $16.90 for one race, and registration opens onsite one hour before the start. Single-day entries do not include a shirt or official series scoring and results.
This format asks for a five-Sunday commitment, but it gives children repeated chances to take part. Volunteer openings are also listed for one or more weeks. Parking details and the specific course surface were not confirmed on the registration page.
Race For A Soldier: the widest choice of running distances
Sunday, September 13
Tom Taylor Family YMCA, 10550 Harbor Hill Drive, Gig Harbor
Half marathon, 10K, 5K, kids’ run, and virtual options
Race For A Soldier is a nearby option rather than a Kitsap County event. It has the widest range of traditional running distances in this guide. The registration page lists a 7:50 a.m. half marathon, 7:55 a.m. 10K, 8 a.m. 5K, and 10 a.m. kids’ run.
There is a start-time conflict to verify. The foundation’s main schedule and RunSignup list the half marathon at 7:50 a.m., but an FAQ on the foundation page says 7:45 a.m. Use 7:50 a.m. only as the current registration-facing time, and check with the organizer before race day.
Displayed fees through August 31 are $90 for the half marathon, $65 for the 10K, and $50 for the 5K, before processing charges. Those prices increase September 1. The kids’ run is displayed at $15 through September 6. The $45 virtual option has a September 5 registration deadline. Youth, military, first-responder, team, corporate, and family discounts may apply during registration; confirm eligibility and the final amount at checkout.
The foundation lists packet pickup at Best Western Wesley Inn & Suites in Gig Harbor from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, September 11, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, September 12. It directs race parking to the Gig Harbor Sportsman Club. Walkers are allowed, but the course closes at noon. Pets are not allowed on the course; strollers are permitted with instructions to leave room for others to pass.
Big Hurt: a relay or multisport project, not a stand-alone 10K
Friday–Saturday, September 25–26
Downtown Port Angeles
15-mile mountain bike, 2.6-mile kayak, 30-mile road bike, and 10K run
Big Hurt is an Olympic Peninsula day-trip or overnight option. The 10K is the final leg of a four-part multisport event. It is not listed as a separate running race.
You can complete all four legs in the individual Iron division or divide them among a relay team. Team categories include regular teams of three or four, two-person tandem teams, masters, first-responder, and high-school teams. The run is described as an out-and-back route on the Olympic Discovery Trail along the Port Angeles waterfront.
On August 20, the Big Hurt registration page displayed $95 for an individual entry. Regular team-member pricing was listed at $75 through August 31, with lower pricing for high-school team members. Prices rise September 1. Registering by September 1 is also required to be assured a shirt in your selected size.
Packet pickup is scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, September 25, at Field Arts & Events Hall. Saturday check-in runs from 6:30 to 7:15 a.m. at Pebble Beach Park. A mandatory pre-race meeting is listed for 7:30 a.m., followed by a 9 a.m. start. Participants must begin the 10K leg by 3 p.m., and the race cutoff is 4 p.m.
This choice requires the most planning. Teams need to assign legs, arrange equipment, and follow the transition and kayak instructions. Read the full race information before registering rather than treating it as a casual 10K entry.
